We have an interesting problem on our Novell Network.
Whenever you leave a BR session for an extended time (perhaps 15 minutes), the first I/O takes 20 seconds.
This includes things like PROC, DIR or any I/O.
Novell uses IPX for communication so it can’t be DNS or something like that. Also, my DNS is always super fast.
Any ideas?

[BR_forum] 20 Second Delay on Network Drive
Do other applications have this problem? What kind of drives are they? What file sharing protocol are you using? What OS is the server?

[BR_forum] 20 Second Delay on Network Drive
I would say the hard drives are shutting off after being idle for so long and taking a minute to start back up. That really shouldn't happen with that setup, though. But it is possible.
I recently had an interesting experience with running BR with data on a file share. If I kept the data local, it would read an entire file (about 500 records) in few hundredths of a second. If I moved the data to a file share and ran BR on a separate server, that same read took 5 seconds. The slow-down was enormous. I wouldn't recommend this setup unless it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise your programs will run slow as molasses.
Is this client-server or are you running the windows version of BR on the workstation?

You really notice it in BR, but I do think that it affects other applications. The problem is I don’t really run many applications that require file sharing the way BR does.
Novell Netware 6.5
The hard disks are a 3 disk SCSI array. I am fairly certain that it is not the hard disks because the effect is on each workstation. I am not entirely certain if the effect is for each session or the entire machine.
The workstations are using the Microsoft Client for Netware, using Ethernet 802.2
IPXROUTE CONFIG produces the following:
NWLink IPX Routing and Source Routing Control Program v2.00
Num Name Network Node Frame

[BR_forum] 20 Second Delay on Network Drive
I had this type of problem several years ago with my last Netware client. We were in the process of converting to a Microsoft Server. It seems that the applications were getting confused when they saw both Netware and Microsoft file sharing active. When finally disconnect the Netware server and removed IPX protocol, the problems went away.

[BR_forum] 20 Second Delay on Network Drive
I am running the Windows version of BR on the workstation.
I would agree about the hard disks except that the hard disks are in constant use because it is a network server, and at one point or another someone is always using the server. I could for example have 3 machines, and go to each machine and experience the same 20 second day one right after the other.
You are very correct about BR performance and shared files. When a file is on a local drive, windows knows that you are the only user, and has ways of improving performance, essentially the entire file is moved into memory, and is treated much like a big array. This does not happen if the file is located on a shared drive. Even if that shared drive is on your own computer.
This performance difference is a good reason to use the client server model under Windows or Unix.
