Program Bak Files - redirect to another directory

Is there an Option or Env variable to put the .bak files into another directory?
I want to have .bak files, but I DON'T want them intermixed in with my .BR or .WB program files.
This creates a lot of clutter when doing mass updates or reloading of all programs.
I do not want to suppress the creation of the .bak files, just redirect them to a \bak directory, for example.
Anyone done this already?
