TYPEAHEAD OFF affecting GRIDS

We have an issue on MACS where TYPEAHEAD ON is causing some crashes so I set it to TYPEAHEAD OFF
Now in Grids you have to hit a key then hit it again to have it actually show up in a cell as the first entry. Each new cell you enter you have to do this? I was wondering if this was by design since it appears to do this on both platforms and all versions from 4.18 up through the current 4.3 that I am testing.
